Caedium Release Notes

Release notes provide descriptions of enhancements and bug fixes for each release of Caedium and its add-ons.

If an enhancement or bug fix is specific to an add-on, the add-on is listed in square brackets, e.g., [Builder]. Note that all enhancements and bug fixes are included in the Professional add-on, which is a collection of all Caedium add-ons.

Known Issues

  • If a media player does not launch after exporting an animation file (.avi), select File->Preferences, and then in the Properties Panel select the Export->Movies property, right-click on it, and select Reset.
  • Windows
    • Preview and playback of an animation file (.avi) created in Caedium requires Windows Media Player.
  • Mac OS X
    • Preview and playback of an animation file (.avi) created in Caedium requires an AVI codec for QuickTime, such as that provided by Perian.
  • Linux
    • Clicking the tab close icon doesn't work in Ubuntu 11.04+, instead select the simulation and use the context menu to delete view/plot/monitor.
    • There is no sound feedback on systems that do not support OSS, applies to Ubuntu 10.10+.
    • Preview of an animation file (.avi) created in Caedium requires the Totem media player.

Caedium 3.0.2 Release Notes

The latest Caedium release has a broad range of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. The new release includes an array of topology-based operations that support a new hybrid modeling scenario where you can build your flow volume from a mixture of faceted and analytic (CAD) geometry. Also there are a selection of new ways to run simulations, with two cloud-based services using Windows Azure and an experimental GPU option for NVIDIA hardware.

New Features and Enhancements

  • Topology Operations
    • Connect faces, edges, and vertices [Builder] to create:
      • Non-manifold geometry for multi-block meshes
      • Zero-thickness (or double-sided) walls
    • Stitch edges and faces to create hybrid faceted and analytic geometry models [Builder]
    • Perform subtract and decompose Boolean operations with hybrid models - no longer limited to true geometry [Builder]
  • Running Simulations
    • Outsource simulations to cloud-based services [RANS Flow]:
      • Cloud Burst: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 SP2 'Burst to Azure'
      • Cloud: Windows Azure
    • Experiment with state-of-the-art GPU acceleration using CUDA on NVIDIA hardware [RANS Flow]
  • Faceted Modeling
    • Import COLLADA faceted geometry from Google SketchUp [Exchange]
    • Extract feature edges from faceted models with a facet feature angle preference [Exchange]
    • Create hybrid faceted and true geometry models using new topology operations [Builder]
  • Infrastructure
    • Perform more robust Boolean operations using OpenCascade 6.5.1 [Builder]
    • Realize shorter startup times and improved overall performance with OpenFOAM® 2.0.x, especially on Windows with new MinGW-w64 compiler improvements [RANS Flow]
    • See reduced simulation turnaround time with an optimized OpenFOAM mesh representation [RANS Flow]
  • Miscellaneous
    • Use new selection filters to easily select geometry based on a wide range of constraints
    • Automate operations, such as export, during simulation updates using new telemetrics [RANS Flow|Transient]
    • Create detailed geometry, mesh, and physics reports using the new Info tool [Builder]

Bug Fixes

  • Trying to create a force monitor on a non-simulation volume face caused Caedium to crash [RANS Flow|Panel Flow]
  • Trying to extract results on a non-simulation volume caused Caedium to crash [RANS Flow|Panel Flow]
  • Residual monitor properties included erroneous 'geometry' property after restore [RANS Flow|Panel Flow]
  • Trying to display an existing Color Map (e.g., p) did not automatically switch the view to that Color Map [RANS Flow|Panel Flow]
  • Scaling geometry by zero corrupted model [Builder]
  • Poor error message when trying to use faceted geometry in a subtract Boolean operation [Builder]
  • Errors and warnings about corrupt geometry during Boolean operations on simple shapes [Builder]
  • Clipping slider properties did not respond to arrow or page-up/down keys
  • Clipping range did not update after creating new geometry [Builder]
  • Toggling Freeze sometimes caused internal errors [RANS Flow|Transient]
  • Symmetry boundary condition visualization was not scaled by base units [RANS Flow|Panel Flow]
  • Corrupt view if a camera was saved with the camera focal point at the camera position
  • Temporary directory name clashes when running 100s of Caedium instances
  • Camera shake during animation [RANS Flow|Transient]
  • ABL Ustar calculation missing for epsilon [RANS Flow]
  • AMG solver hit maximum iteration limit due to absolute tolerance being too small [RANS Flow]
  • Erroneous blank camera upon restore after deleting a camera immediately prior to save on Linux
  • Trying to drag and drop a window tab near an edge of the application caused Caedium to crash on Ubuntu 11.04
  • Menu bar was invisible if desktop was switched from Ubuntu (default Unity) to Ubuntu Classic on Ubuntu 11.04
  • Graphics driver memory leak on Mac OS X GeForce 9400. Workaround is to switch off hardware-accelerated displayed lists using new preference: File->Preferences, Visualization->Hardware Acceleration

Caedium Version 2.4.2 Release Notes

This release contains an enhancement to better preserve accuracy for small length scale models and a bug fix that prevents a RANS Flow simulation from failing.

Caedium Version 2.4.1 Release Notes

This release contains an important bug fix for the Heat Flux temperature boundary condition option.

Caedium Version 2.4.0 Release Notes

The latest Caedium release contains a variety of enhancements and bug fixes. One of the highlights is the ability to produce high quality rendered movies (animations) with the option to use either POV-Ray or a Renderman-compliant application (e.g., Aqsis) to produce each movie frame. Frames can be rendered in parallel (either on standalone multi-core computers or on a cluster running Windows HPC Server 2008) in order to significantly speed up the overall movie creation process.

Another highlight of this Caedium release is the improved interactive performance when manipulating the 3D view and selecting entities. Plots and monitors now have interactive panning and zooming.

Caedium Version 2.3.0 Release Notes

The OpenFOAM®1 solvers and utilities used by the Caedium RANS Flow and Professional add-ons have been upgraded to OpenFOAM 1.7.x from 1.6.x. Also the unsteady incompressible flow solvers in Caedium now use PIMPLE instead of PISO. PIMPLE has better stability for large time steps compared to PISO.

Caedium Version 2.2.0 Release Notes

The Caedium RANS Flow and Professional add-ons can now perform CFD simulations in parallel, either on a single machine with multiple cores or on a Windows cluster, which can lead to a significant reduction in simulation turnaround time. Also Windows and Linux versions of Caedium are now 64-bit, which means Caedium can perform much larger simulations (no longer being limited to the 32-bit memory maximum of 2-4 GB).

Caedium Version 2.1.1 Release Notes

This release contains a number of important bug fixes, mainly for the new Mac OS X version of Caedium.

Caedium Version 2.1.0 Release Notes

The highlight of this release is the availability of a native Apple Mac version of Caedium. There are also various 3D selection, Properties Panel, geometry, physics, and particles enhancements for Windows and Linux platforms.
